Our Review of the Kelty Convertible baby backpack

The one-of-a-kind Kelty Convertible Carrier is both a baby backpack and a walking stroller in one. With just a few simple adjustments you will be able to switch back and forth between the twin modes, and can even make the switch without having to remove your child from the cockpit.

Benefits for Mom and Dad

If you are a parent that enjoys the closeness of a carrier but wants to retain the option to stroll, the Convertible Carrier may be the way to go. For strolling in well-paved urban environments, the Convertible performs well and is fairly maneuverable.

Comfort: This latest version of the Convertible Carrier has a few adjustments and improvements over the previous Kelty Convertible model, such as a partition between the storage basket and leg rest that will keep your child's feet out of the basket, thus preventing her from pressing down and stopping the wheels during strolls. In addition, the fold-over cover keeps the wheels from rubbing against your back when using the Convertible as a baby backpack, and the back support underwent some needed improvements.

The shoulder and waistbelt are padded and adjust to suit your size, and the mesh back panel is great for releasing heat. There's also a torso length adjustment to assure you get the right balance for the pack.

Convenience: Versatility is the name of the game with the Kelty Convertible. You can switch from stroller to backpack in seconds with a few simple adjustments, and the load lift straps make it easier to hoist a child up to 50 lbs onto your shoulders for a carry. Simply unlock the handlebar, close it down with the no-pinch hinges, fold in the legs, and your stroller is now a baby backpack with padded waist support and ample storage space.

Benefits for Babe

Raised up on your back or strolling along smoothly on the sidewalk, through the zoo, or around the aisles of the local mall, your child will be comfortable and secure riding in the versatile Kelty Convertible Carrier. It is equipped with a 5-point harness for security and allows you to transport your child in a way that best suits your environment - strolling when the ground is smooth and up on your back when the road gets rough.

Comfort: The cockpit seat of the Kelty Convertible is modeled after Kelty's fantastic line of framed baby backpacks, even adjusting to accommodate your child's height as he or she grows. Kelty included a water bottle holder and storage pouch for drinks and snacks, and loops to keep hanging toys within easy reach.

Safety:

  • 5-point harness
  • No-pinch hinges
  • 3M reflective tape
  • JPMA Certified

Comparison

The Kelty Convertible is the only carrier of it's kind on the market today, but it's unusual versatility does come at a price. While not a perfect stroller, nor an ideal child carrier, the versatility of the Kelty Convertible Carrier makes up for its few shortcomings. There really is nothing we can compare it to, but if it's a framed backpack carrier you're looking for, we highly recommend the Kelty Framed Carrier 3.0

we Love it!

My family loved this stroller/ backpack. We used it when my child was 3 months to 11 months, only because my child is a big boy and simply outgrew it. He got to be about 23 pounds and he is very tall, he would stretch out his body and it would make the wheels stop and stutter because he would step on them. The Item went EVERYWHERE with us and we used it more as a stroller. Nothing broke on it and we were the second family that had this item. So, I would say that it held up very well. As I'm about to give this away to a good friend of mine, I would definitely buy another one if I decide to have more children. It is definitely worth the money. My child was very comfortable in it, and it is easy to get the baby in and out of it.The wheels go fine on dirt, gravel and grass and it's small enough to go anywhere. Five stars for this invention!!!!!

Functionality but limited durability

We've used this backpack/stroller for about 14 months now and have mixed feelings about it. The functionality of this equipment is great with the option of stroller or backpack. It's ideal for smooth hiking trails with rugged sections where you need to convert to backpack. It also manuevered well as a stroller in rocky terrain initially. However, after about six months the aluminum stabilizer bar between rear wheels broke leaving us with limited use other than pavement/light gravel road use. The seat has been comfortable for our son from 3 months to present of 16 months. The wheels are a bit difficult to manuever now that he's heavier. I'd recommend this unit if you're like the conversion option; however, long-term durability is questionable. The backpack can be heavier than most standard backpack carriers if needed for longer hikes.

Kelty Convertible

The Kelty convertible was heaven sent on the vacation we recently took. The light weight material that it is made of was ideal for traveling. The width and how compact the stroller is proved to be an asset on the cruise ship (with its very narrow halls). We also felt blessed to have the convertible stroller when we ventured off the cruise ship to the beach. We simply converted the stroller to the backpack and walked on the beach with our son with us. Overall, we are glad to have invested in such a contraption. However, we found it difficult at times to control the wheels on the stroller.

The best item we have purchased for our children!

The Kelty Convertible is by far the best product we have purchased for our children. We have had the carrier for 3 years now and it is still working wonders. The fact that it transforms from a backpack carrier to a stroller is absolutely awesome. We take it camping and to the beach and use it even at the mall. It has several storage compartments and even a detachable backpack for snacks and diapers and such. My husband and I agree that this item is a must for every parent!!!!

Warning: Used as a stroller, this backpack tips easily

Reviewer: Anonymous , New Hope, PA Date: July 16, 2006
We used the backpack/stroller for a trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion & Bryce Canyons. It worked like a dream, especially in the airport when we switched quickly between modes depending on the situation (escalators needed in a hurry). Used as a stroller, it can tip VERY easily. Please be careful. We used the shade awning extensively in the desert heat. It worked great as our baby refused to wear hats. Cannot begin to tell you how may comments we got on this great product! We were able to transfer fairly easily between parents with radically different builds. Our baby was about 25 pounds when we did this trip. We never would have survived the trip without this pack. We used the stroller mode more than we thought as the National Parks were more accessible than anticipated. The pack was easy to get baby into and out of. We bought the stirrup accessory which we ended up feeling was unnecessary. This combination is great for a major trip when you don't have the luxury of taking both a stroller & a backpack. But at home, I use a regular stroller that is more stable and secure.

Kelty Convertible

If you are a "gearhead" this is for you. Have used the carrier for weekends on Fire Island. The ability to carry our daughter and use as a stroller is invaluable when Ferries and sand are involved. Not the most comfortable stroller for long durations but I don't think thats what Kelty had in mind anyway.

Kelty Convertible at Beach and Shopping

5
Reviewer: Mark and Peg Zeigler , Thurmont, MD Date: March 07, 2006
We can not say enough about our Kelty Convertible stroller. My sister-in-law, a pediatric specialist, found ours at a closeout at a kids store in Philadephia last Christmas. She raved to us she found the perfect stroller for our then one-month old daughter. We were really unimpressed by it at first, and kept in hiatus until we decided to take it with us to the North Carolina Outer Banks this past May, since it took up less space in our SUV than our traditional Graco stroller. Once we got to the beach we realized what a wonderful product this Kelty stroller was. Not only was it easier for us to place our six-month old in it, but she enjoyed being taken all over the place. We received many curious looks, and favorable comments, with many of the people who stopped us to ask about this unusal stoller, asking us where we got ours. The Kelty Convertible is easy to maneuver, and can handle store aisles with ease. Many shop keepers we came in contact with remarked how they wished more parents of young children would go to this type of stroller. The only concern we had on ours is the wheels sometimes got caught sideways, especially if they were on softer surfaces. Our stroller also had no head cover for our daughter, which we compromised with plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses and a long brimmed hat. The beauty about the convertible is when we went to the beach, we converted our stroller into the backpack, and were able to walk on the beach as a family, without the hassles of trying to push the stroller through the sand. When we returned to the road, we converted back to the stroller with ease. The handles were also a big plus, and saved us when we were able to carry her up steps, and not have to walk out of our way to go places. We love our Kelty Convertible, and have already had some of our friends already purchasing Kelty products. Now, if only Kelty had a Double Convertible Stroller, that would be either front to front, or front to back. My wife is expecting our second child this fall, and we already plan to add another Kelty stroller to our inventory. We highly recommend any parents expecting, or with small children/infants to consider purchasing this product. It has been worth every penny, and then some.
